MUSIC AT THE FAREWELL CEREMONY

Music has always been a profound medium for expressing the deepest human emotions. Present in every culture, it accompanies us throughout life’s journey and remains an essential part of religious rites. Due to its soothing influence, music is even utilized today for therapeutic purposes.

Music is there when we are happy or in love, but also when we grieve. Sometimes it serves as a subtle backdrop that completes an atmosphere, while at other times, it is the primary element responsible for setting the tone. Music can rejoice with us, but it also comforts and encourages us.

As an integral part of life, we associate music with distinct moments and individuals. A simple melody can instantly transport us back to cherished times or evoke the memory of a loved one who is no longer with us. Music speaks a universal language, understood by all; it is indispensable when words fail, when we must say a final goodbye to a friend or family member, and when we want to say so much but cannot find the strength.

In those moments, it is best to rely on music.

The possibilities are truly endless, just as there are countless unique souls departing this world. For every one of them, at least one song or melody has been written.

Depending on the atmosphere you wish to create for the farewell, selected hymns or compositions can be performed by a choir or a professional brass band. If you are uncertain about your choice, allow us to suggest selections from our extensive repertoire, which includes secular and religious compositions as well as funeral marches.

Brass Band Protocol at Zagreb Cemeteries

The standard protocol for brass band ceremonies at Zagreb cemeteries provides for the performance of three songs: the first as the deceased is carried from the mortuary to the funeral vehicle, the second before the funeral procession begins, and the third at the graveside as the casket is lowered. We recommend a fourth song to be played at the very end to complete the solemnity of the burial.

If the farewell includes honors, speeches, or additional music, the number of songs must be synchronized with the limited duration of the ceremony. To ensure the ceremony proceeds perfectly, every detail must follow the established protocol, as funeral services allow no room for improvisation. Any deviations or changes must be coordinated with the Master of Ceremonies prior to the service. At other cemeteries, musical services are adapted to local and religious customs and are arranged specifically.

Choir Protocol at Zagreb Cemeteries

The protocol for choir ceremonies at Zagreb cemeteries includes three songs: the first as the deceased is carried from the mortuary to the funeral vehicle, the second before the funeral procession begins, and the third at the grave as the casket is lowered. We also suggest a fourth song at the very end to complete the burial ceremony. As with the brass band, all details must be pre-planned and coordinated with the Master of Ceremonies to maintain the dignity of the service.

Choir Protocol at the Mirogoj Crematorium

The protocol for choir ceremonies at the Mirogoj Crematorium is limited to three songs when a religious representative is present. The first song is performed as the catafalque enters the farewell hall, the second following the religious introduction, and the third as the casket descends. If the service includes honors or speeches, the number of songs must be balanced with the time constraints of the venue.
