After cremation

CREMATION PROTOCOL

The cremation protocol includes preparatory measures such as organizing the details of the farewell or funeral service, the procedure itself—conducted at the Crematorium on Zagreb’s Mirogoj—and the subsequent interment of the urn, the scattering of ashes, or their temporary safekeeping until the final arrangements are made. Once a family or friends decide on cremation, they are offered the option to set aside a small portion of the ashes to keep in their home or place in a location of personal significance. For this purpose, it is necessary to select a memorial urn that best complements your space and lifestyle.

These discreetly designed vessels, which allow a small part of your loved one to remain with you always, can be found in our selection of memorial urns. All our models are manufactured to the highest global aesthetic and hygienic standards, meeting the needs of those seeking a decorative vessel as well as those requiring a practical, lightweight memorial urn that allows for easy transport—ensuring that, if necessary, the remains can safely reach a final resting place on the other side of the world.

The memorial urn will be handed to you by the Crematorium staff or POKOP employees following the cremation, after the main portion of the ashes has been stored in the primary (standard) urn. This procedure is strictly regulated, as are the mandatory elements on the primary urn. These include the full name of the deceased, the dates of birth and death, and a registry number located on the external lid. A cremation identification number is also recorded on a special internal plaque, which serves to confirm the identity of the remains should the external inscription become damaged.

The ashes in the primary urn can be:

Interred

  • In an urn niche (columbarium) within a cemetery.

  • In a family grave or vault.

  • In the Urn Grove (Gaj urni) at the Zagreb Crematorium on Mirogoj.

Scattered

  • On the Sunny Meadow (Sunčana poljana) at the Zagreb Crematorium on Mirogoj.

Stored

  • At the Zagreb Crematorium on Mirogoj until conditions for interment are met.

  • Within the funeral center, under the care of the funeral director.

The safekeeping of the primary urn is intended for those who are still in the process of selecting a final resting place for their family member or friend. This demanding task does not have to be long or arduous if you engage professionals. By entrusting the entire process to the experts at POKOP, you can be certain that the solution found will best suit your needs and budget, thanks to our highly specialized legal team with extensive market expertise.
