Funeral or Farewell Service
The final goodbye to a deceased person and their journey into eternity is traditionally organized as a funeral (burial) or a farewell ceremony, according to religious and local customs.
A FUNERAL or BURIAL is the act of interring the deceased in a grave or vault, in a casket or an urn. When we speak of a FAREWELL CEREMONY, it typically refers to a service where the deceased is not interred in the cemetery of the place of passing, but elsewhere. Following the organized farewell, the immediate family and guests proceed to the final resting place. A FAREWELL SERVICE can also be held at a crematorium, where we say goodbye before or after cremation, depending on the wishes of the deceased or the family.
FUNERALS and FAREWELLS for military personnel follow a special protocol.
When considering the moment of a final farewell, the most important thing is to remember the person’s unique personality and pay tribute by thanking them for everything they brought to your life. Every funeral ceremony should serve as a reminder of the time spent together and reflect that unique bond. This can be expressed through additional elements such as carefully selected music, eulogies, poetry readings, or the scattering of rose petals. Such expressions of love, respect, and closeness enrich any service, whether it is a religious ceremony with its specific rules or an atheist farewell, which should be designed to meaningfully fill the absence of traditional religious rites.
POKOP Funeral Agency can organize all types of funerals and farewells entirely according to the wishes of the deceased and their family. We are here to help with advice or suggestions while always respecting your requirements and religious traditions. Consider the most appropriate music: a chamber ensemble, an a cappella choir, a harp, or a trumpet. A beautiful way to say a final “goodbye” is through the service of a professional orator who can read favorite verses or deliver a eulogy that highlights the life and good deeds of the deceased.
To honor the memory of the loved one, it is customary to display a photograph at funeral ceremonies, which we will appropriately decorate. Farewell services at the crematorium can also be enhanced with a video presentation.
Memorial cards are a beautiful keepsake given to participants. When choosing a photograph, ensure it radiates the personality of the deceased, showing them in a characteristic, happy moment. We have prepared several visual solutions for memorial cards that can be further customized. For those who want a permanent record, we also offer professional video recording of the funeral ceremony.
Please share all your wishes regarding the funeral or farewell service you want us to organize. We will respond to your trust with understanding and a professional approach, ensuring the entire ceremony is dignified and fully in line with your expectations.
Funeral Planning
Every one of us is special. Countless small things distinguish us in life and in the moment we depart from this world. Some prepare their loved ones for this inevitable event in advance, while others leave the choice of the most appropriate burial method to their survivors. We also find ourselves in this role when the passing of a dear person occurs unexpectedly. While we may know how some people would like to be sent off—because we discussed it openly or they left written instructions—many of us will face the task of making many decisions in a very short time.
Regardless of your specific situation, POKOP and its experts are on your side. We will help the planning process proceed as quickly and comfortably as possible. Thanks to our experience and high level of professionalism, you will find in us a reliable partner for any part of the service or complete organization.

Before taking any steps, you must decide between cremation or a traditional burial, which are the only legally permitted methods of interment in the Republic of Croatia. It is not uncommon for family members to desire different methods. Therefore, this decision should not be rushed; research the views of the deceased and, if necessary, seek advice from their religious community.
CREMATION is the process of incinerating remains at high temperatures, after which the ashes are stored in urns. The entire protocol is conducted by the Zagreb Crematorium. Due to urban mobility and the reduction of available grave sites, an increasing number of families prefer cremation. It is often a simpler and more cost-effective process that allows you to keep a piece of your loved one’s memory with you, as a small portion of the ashes can be kept in a special memorial urn.
BURIAL is the choice for owners of traditional family plots and those whose religious or personal beliefs do not permit cremation. This form of interment was once the most popular in Croatia but is becoming less common due to modern lifestyles.
If you cannot decide between cremation and burial, we suggest contacting us so we can help you make an informed decision and walk through all the other details of funeral planning together.
